The McHughs' State Fair Adventure- 2011

The first Friday of the state fair has become "our" fair day. Nanna and II always come from Fargo to enjoy the day with us. This year's party included: Grandma & Grandpa McHugh, Carley & her friend, Michelle, Nanna & II and the 4 of us. We started off watching the horses exercise up and down the street while eating mini donuts. Then to the WCCO booth to wait for the Sweet Martha's Cookie stand to open. The rest of day was spent visiting all of our favorite spots (except the barns... how did we miss the barns?)

Overall, it was a really fun day. We only suffered 2 major meltdowns. Luke's occurred at the top of the giant slide. He totally chickened out... looking back, we should have sent Riley on her own potato sack. She's got more guts than Lukie. Riley's meltdown occurred in the middle of the kids' farm experience. In fact, seconds after the picture above was taken, she completely lost it. I ended up leaving Luke with Carley and hauling Riley off to the stroller. She screamed bloody murder all the way back... once I got her strapped in, II took over and calmed her down. She was asleep in about 90 seconds. No joke. 90 seconds.

Once everyone was awake, we hit the midway. Luke was less of a chicken this time and mom got to go on some fun rides under the guise of "helping" Luke overcome his fears. The beetle ride was "too fast", until we were actually on it. Luke hit perma grin at the ride's top speed. Riley got to go on one ride and she LOVED it! I suspect she'll want to tackle big rides like the Power Tower as soon as she reaches the height requirement.

Every year at the fair is more and more fun. It's so cool to see the fair through the eyes of our kids and relive memories I have of being a kid at the MN in State Fair, too. It won't be long before Luke and Riley are betting quarters with II during the beef cattle show in the coliseum. (Hopefully by then the rules of the game will be clearly defined so II can't stack the deck in his favor.)
