Happy 6th Birthday Luke!
Luke's 6th birthday was celebrated in a special way! We received a great invitation from the Bisbee Family to join them at their cabin for some summer fun at the lake. I wasn't sure Luke would want to be away from home for his birthday so it was so fun to see him accept the invite before I had even finished the sentence... "You mean I get to spend my birthday at a lake? AWESOME!"
Amy, Alex, Axel and Bella made the weekend so fun for Luke. There was even a birthday banner up to welcome him to the cabin. Our time was filled with fishing, boating, swimming, playing and celebrating. One of the highlights for Luke was getting to sleep on the top bunk in the bunkhouse. It was a triple bunk so Mom was a little nervous. Just one of the many times in Luke's life that I'll have a hard time letting him be a "big boy".
We brought his presents along on the trip. Ever since watching cousin Vaughn open up a card with a $20 bill in it, Luke had been obsessed with adding one to his collection. Well, imagine his surprise when he opened cards from Cousin Glenn (who had stayed with us earlier in the week) and Grandma and Grandpa McHugh... each containing $20 bills. Luke felt like a millionaire!
One of the best gifts from mom and dad's perspective was Luke's improved swimming. When one of Luke's water squirters floated away from the dock, Luke was beside himself. He was not confident in his own swimming ability and thought it would be lost forever. Amy offered to give Axel a piece of licorice to put on his life jacket and swim out to retrieve it. Axel gave a good effort but couldn't quite get it. Watching this, Luke decided that he could swim out and save his toy, especially if he was rewarded with candy. Of course this happened about 10 minutes before we were going to leave for home... once Luke succeeded and started to enjoy the water we didn't know if we were ever going to get him out. It was a real moment of accomplishment for Luke and when we reflect back to when Luke learned to really swim, we won't think community ed. swim lessons. We'll think of June 30, 2012, at the Bisbee cabin on Round Lake. :)
