Luke arrived at the hospital on Sunday morning (the day we checked out) with a hand 4 times his normal size. Unfortunately, the pediatrician had already been to check on Riley and had left the hospital. I called the nurse help line and they suggested Benadryl. Unfortunately, the Benadryl did nothing to stop the spread of the swelling. We loaded all of our stuff up in the car, took the "leaving the hospital" family photos, and drove straight across the street to urgent care. Dan and Luke jumped out for an exam. The doctors were quite impressed with the size of his hand and started to worry that it might be a rapidly spreading infection. The "silly" doctor drew on Luke's wrist to mark how far the swelling had spread and then injected him with 2 BIG shots, one in each leg. Luke is normally really good with medicine and shots, but these 2 shots rendered him unable to walk by the time he got home. We waited through the night to see if the shots would work and the swelling would go down... imagine 2 parents trying to examine his hand in the dark throughout the night. :)
The next morning, the swelling and redness were slowly going down. We went to the pediatric allergy specialist and she believed that it was just a severe reaction to a bug bite. (You could see the bite at the base of his 3rd finger). More oral antibiotics and Luke was on the road to recovery. There's no way of knowing exactly what bit Luke, but it's clear that he and that type of bug just don't get along!
